- Don’t use an open fire—these burn very inefficiently
- Don’t use a wood burner if it’s not required for heating
- If you need to use a wood burner, burn only dry, untreated wood or smokeless coal (almost all waste construction wood has been treated with chemicals that produce high particulate levels and toxic chemicals such as arsenic and dioxins when burned)
- Don’t burn garden waste—put it in your brown bin instead
- Take as many journeys as possible by foot, bicycle or public transport
- Consider replacing your car with an electric car or e-bike (+trailer), or become a member of a local car club scheme offering electric vehicles
- Encourage your local councillor to support stricter regulation of wood burners, a general ban on burning waste/wet wood, and better public transport, and safer cycle routes
